THE EOLIAN ISLANDS: THE MEDITERRANEAN'S BEST KEPT SECRET!
BY JESSE NASH

It was just recently that the Italian Tourism Office in New York invited me to an exclusive presentation of one of their prime new destination points -- the Eolian Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Sicily. For 2009, the Eolian Islands are one of the top destinations being promoted by Italian Tourism -- and with good reason! Truly the pearl of the Mediterranean, the Eolian Islands get their name from Aeolus, Lord of the Winds, who, according to the writing's of Homer, had his home there. And I can understand why. Whether you approach these islands by ferry or plane, the landscape is overwhelming. Imposing volcanos, with strange but beautiful rock formations and thick vegetation on the island of Salina; archaeological treasures and prehistoric villages in Lipari, Panerea, and Filicudi... and the views-fantastico! And the seafood -- some of the best in the world!
And then there's the island of Salina. Most families love this island the most as it is child-friendly with its relative peace and quiet. Also -- most people don't realize that the caper comes from Salina. Every year in the first week of June a festival is held in its honor. Most don't realize that if you were to leave the caper on the tree, it would bloom into a beautiful flower. But most of us end up eating them.
Stromboli is known as 'The Black Giant,' with its volcanic cone still very active serving as a natural lighthouse for mariners. It's a fantastic sight to see once the sun sets as the volcano becomes visible every 15 to 20 minutes.
And accomodations are spectacular with three 5-star hotels and close to 30 4-stars and numerous villa properties available for rent. The one great thing about vacationing here, this destination point is still not the commercial center for tourism like many other islands. But still, even superstars like Madonna, Sir Sean Connery and Jennifer Lopez have managed to discover the Eolian Islands' beauty. Why I even mentioned the Eolian Islands to Connery's public relations people, and the actor responded, "For me, the Eolian Islands are the Shangri-La of the Mediterranean."
The Eolian Islands are easy to reach from any port in Sicily or you can travel even from Naples by boat. For your next vacation experience, you must truly consider the Eolian Islands. You will be welcomed like a long lost friend and be treated like you're one of the family.
